Position Summary: IDS Specialist I is responsible for creating and implementing meaningful learning options and community experiences for IDS Participants. The position is also accountable for documenting participant progress, concerns and/or other participant related data, according to agency policy and procedures and for making sure that assigned IDS participants gain greater self-satisfaction and/or independence as a result of his/her participation in IDS.
Professional Skills and Abilities: Ability to get along with and effectively, and respectfully, communicate with a variety of people. Ability to comprehend oral and written communication and follow-through on those directions and other responsibilities in an accountable manner that meets established expectations and time lines. Ability to initiate, develop, coordinate and provide quality program options for IDS Participants both in the IDS program area and the community. Possess the consistent ability to make sound decisions based on policy and procedure, as well as maintain the ability to offer suggestions in a positive manner. Basic computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, internet, email). Ability to remain calm, objective, considerate and respectful in all interactions. Demonstrate initiative, accountability, honesty, flexibility, creativity, patience.
Developmental Disability Related: Enthusiasm about serving adults with developmental disabilities. Knowledge of community integration, community resources, the principles of “normalization” and person centered planning. A solid understanding of “universal precautions” as they relate to health, safety and personal care.
Miscellaneous: Ability and willingness to work outside in varying weather conditions (wetness, snow, dust, noise, hot/cold etc.) Willingness to access the community throughout the year, with participants in a variety of ways including the city bus, walking to site, etc. Willingness to work with people with an array of disabilities including physical limitations.
Education & Training: High School diploma or equivalent required. Two years’ experience working with adults who are developmentally disabled, or in a related field, or two years of related education, preferred.
