Burlington - Integrated Day Services Specialist

Burlington Position

Position Summary: IDS Specialist I is responsible for creating and implementing meaningful learning options and community experiences for IDS Participants. The position is also accountable for documenting participant progress, concerns and/or other participant related data, according to agency policy and procedures and for making sure that assigned IDS participants gain greater self-satisfaction and/or independence as a result of his/her participation in IDS.

Essential Duties:

  • Assist participants in achieving agreed upon individual program goals that move him/her to the next level of independence.
  • Document (according to details associated with the goal), on a timely basis, assigned participant progress toward goal attainment. Additionally, the position is responsible for completing other participant related data according to agency policy.
  • Position is responsible for initiating, designing and implementing a variety of community opportunities and creative class options for assigned participants.
  • Help participants identify things that they want to try, experience, work on or achieve. Encourage and assist participants with experiencing new things so they have a broader array of experiences from which to make their choices.
  • Actively participant in each assigned participant’s TEAM meeting (i.e. come to the meeting on time and prepared to share information about the person’s goal attainment and community experiences). Be prepared with goal ideas that have been discussed with the IDS Program Supervisor/Manager prior to the meeting.
  • Serve as an advocate for IDS Participants.
  • When assigned, supervise participant medication according to Careers’ policy.
  • Assist participants with arrivals, departures, personal care and mealtime needs.
  • Serve as a role model for all Integrated Day Service participants by interacting with all persons in a calm, fair and respectful manner.
  • Communicate with agency case managers regarding participant goals, activities and concerns. Consistently work as a cooperative team member with all participants, peers and supervisors to ensure goal implementation.
  • Complete all employment related reports/forms according to agency policy (i.e. In-Service Training forms, Accident Reports etc.).
  • When driving a Careers vehicle and/or transporting participants, follow safe and lawful driving standards. Report vehicle related data according to agency policy and procedure.
  • Be active in keeping calendars, goals, and supply lists updated; checking and filling supplies; cleaning and organizing items and spaces used by the department.

Qualifications:

Professional Skills and Abilities: Ability to get along with and effectively, and respectfully, communicate with a variety of people. Ability to comprehend oral and written communication and follow-through on those directions and other responsibilities in an accountable manner that meets established expectations and time lines. Ability to initiate, develop, coordinate and provide quality program options for IDS Participants both in the IDS program area and the community. Possess the consistent ability to make sound decisions based on policy and procedure, as well as maintain the ability to offer suggestions in a positive manner. Basic computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, internet, email). Ability to remain calm, objective, considerate and respectful in all interactions. Demonstrate initiative, accountability, honesty, flexibility, creativity, patience.

Developmental Disability Related: Enthusiasm about serving adults with developmental disabilities. Knowledge of community integration, community resources, the principles of “normalization” and person centered planning. A solid understanding of “universal precautions” as they relate to health, safety and personal care.

Miscellaneous: Ability and willingness to work outside in varying weather conditions (wetness, snow, dust, noise, hot/cold etc.) Willingness to access the community throughout the year, with participants in a variety of ways including the city bus, walking to site, etc. Willingness to work with people with an array of disabilities including physical limitations.

Education & Training: High School diploma or equivalent required. Two years’ experience working with adults who are developmentally disabled, or in a related field, or two years of related education, preferred.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Ability to balance, crouch, bend, stoop, crawl, walk, kneel, twist, stretch, stand and sit.
  • Ability to reach overhead and front, lift and carry varying weights.
  • Ability to push and pull up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to transfer participants in and out of vans, wheelchairs and bathrooms.
  • Ability to transfer participants using 2-person transfer maneuver, gait belt or Hoyer lift.
  • Ability to independently and spontaneously travel to various locations.
  • Have a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Drive agency vehicles as required.
  • If using own car, adequate auto insurance.

Other Duties: Carry out other job related duties assigned.

Measures of Success:

  • Ability to create and provide sensitive, respectful, meaningful and imaginative learning possibilities and community experiences for Integrated Day Service participants that include opportunities for participant personal growth and self-determination.
  • Ability to complete assigned responsibilities, reports, employment related report, vehicle logs and all participant related documentation in a timely manner, according to agency policy and procedure.
  • Participant medications are supervised and recorded according to agency policy.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, through appropriate channels, information regarding specific participants or the IDS program.
  • Ability to remain calm, objective and considerate regardless of circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with all participants, peers and supervisors in order to ensure program integrity and cohesive service delivery.
  • Ability to continuously follow agency policy, procedure and mission.
